// How do we bring our physical bodies with us into our inevitably digitally-bound futures? Collaboratively conceived by Director Brian J. Johnson and Vancouver's acclaimed Company 605, Future Futures is a collection of 5 short dance films that explore the digital destiny of humankind through a unique merging of camera and visual effects with an intensely specific choreographic vision. Embracing the absurdity of centering dance inside a sci-fi narrative, the experimental series collapses time to portray human culture at an unprecedented moment: an emergence of a new, autonomous and intelligent being - the digital reflection and culmination of ourselves. In a state of mass transition, and forced into a bizarre coexistence alongside this growing presence, the remaining population of embodied "real" humans confront their own fears and curiosity of this new dawn while grieving what might be left behind in their looming obsolescence.

Biografie der Regisseurin Naza Kuu // Director's Biography Naza Kuu

Naza Kuu
Naza Kuu

// Naza Kuu is an independent Spanish director since 2004, and all her films until today have been self-produced. After a master's degree in music education at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and acting studies with the actor J. Carlos Corazza, she bought her first camera in 2004 and made her first documentaries. In 2006 she moved to Argentina where she developed as a writer and director of short fiction films and music videos, and some experimental documentaries. In 2010, this time in Ecuador, she directed "Cometa en órbita", a documentary with which she asserts her style: the intimate portrait. Since this film, Naya's documentary work is never written in advance, it always begins with an encounter with an engaging person and their captivating story. A sincere and objective relationship is then established between the director and her subject. The latter opens up and tells his story naturally and spontaneously, Naya tries to forget the camera and only tries to tell the real story. In 2015, returned to Europe and settled in Brussels. Still, with the same approach, she tells the story of Ramòn Rodrìguez, the protagonist of her documentary "A journey".

// Eleven members of a family gather around a table in the late evening under the roof of their parents' house for a happy get-together. As dinner is served, they go through the sequence of memories that reveal the rift, the glassy fragility of the gang and the growing gap between them under the dominance of the parents and especially the mother.

// The topic of misunderstanding within the family is very relevant for me and the people around me, especially last year. The main idea of this film is: directive form, manipulation and constant pressure cannot lead to healthy relations. The stronger the pressure is, the higher the chance of destruction.

// I decided to direct this film because I was interested to translate dance perfomance, created by our choreographer Maya, from stage language to cinema language. While watching this film, I wanted the viewer, no matter from location, to recognize same problem we can face with our dearest people. This film is special to me because I was part of dance creation during month before production. We were searching for translating dance frases into some small details or less movement analogs, that would work and create more meaning in frame.

// The experience working on this film will help me with future projects because it pushed for a more careful search for ways to tell the story. Without resorting to dialogue, only with composition, details, movement and emotions.

Biografie des Regisseurs Hofesh Shechter // Director’s Biography Hofesh Shechter

Hofesh Shechter
Hofesh Shechter

// Choreographer, filmmaker and composer, Hofesh Shechter OBE is Artistic Director of the UK-based Hofesh Shechter Company, formed in 2008. Shechter is recognised as one of the most exciting artists making work for both stage and film. His ability in both disciplines defy traditional expectations and in addition, Shechter is renowned for composing atmospheric musical scores that complement the unique physicality of his much-celebrated work.

Shechter hat für Theater, Fernsehen und Oper choreografiert, unter anderem an der Metropolitan Opera (New York) für Nico Mulhys Two Boys, am Royal Court für Motortown und The Arsonists, am National Theatre für Saint Joan, am Broadway für die Wiederaufnahme von Fiddler on the Roof und für die Channel-4-Serie Skins. In Zusammenarbeit mit der BBC hat Shechter den ersten Tanzfilm der Kompanie, Clowns, kreiert, der 2018 von der BBC mit großem Erfolg ausgestrahlt wurde.// Having choreographed for theatre, television and opera, notably at the Metropolitan Opera (New York) for Nico Mulhy’s Two Boys, the Royal Court on Motortown and The Arsonists, the National Theatre on Saint Joan, Broadway’s revival of Fiddler on the Roof and for the Channel 4 series Skins, Shechter in partnership with the BBC, created the company's first dance film, Clowns, which was broadcast by the BBC to great acclaim in 2018.

// Shechter’s stage work is often hailed as cinematic and it was only a matter of time before creating his directorial debut with the unapologetic and exhilarating new short film POLITICAL MOTHER: The Final Cut. Filmed during lockdown at Battersea Arts Centre, Shechter brings the striking iconic architecture of the venue to film – from the elegance of the Grand Hall, the atmospheric intimate spaces to the labyrinthine gothic corridors, creating an extraordinary film and dance piece which is at once emotionally complex, powerfully significant and theatrically thrilling. Premiering in the UK in July 2021, POLITICAL MOTHER: The Final Cut has since gone on to win the Audience Award 2022 for Best Live Performance Relay & Camera Rework at Cinedans Fest 2022 and Best Dance Film at Festival de Cannes.

// In 2021, Shechter collaborated with French filmmaker Cédric Klapisch to work on the much-anticipated feature ‘En corps’. Released in March 2022, along with a soundtrack created by Shechter himself, the film continues to be screened globally.

// Shechter’s production Grand Finale was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production (2017) and in 2016 Shechter received a Tony Award nomination for his choreography for the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof.
